Reading your tracker

What your sleep tracker is really telling you

Your sleep tracker is telling you an estimate, not a measurement. It infers your night from heart rate, movement, and temperature, then scores it. That makes it useful for spotting weekly trends and poor at judging a single night. What it can never see is the racing mind that actually decides how you sleep.

These guides walk through what the numbers really mean, which ones deserve your attention, and where to put your energy once you stop chasing the score.

Questions

Common questions about sleep trackers

The things people ask most when the numbers and their body disagree.

What is my sleep tracker actually telling me?
It is telling you an estimate of your night, built from heart rate, movement, and temperature rather than brain waves. It is good at total sleep time and weekly trends, and shakier on sleep stages. Treat it as a rear-view mirror on the night, not a verdict on how you slept.
Should I trust my sleep score?
Trust it as a trend over weeks, not as a grade on any single night. The score is a private formula applied to indirect signals, so it can disagree with how you feel. When the number and your body conflict on a given morning, weight how rested you feel more heavily.
Why is my deep sleep always low?
Deep sleep is front-loaded into the first one to two hours of the night and naturally declines with age. A low number usually reflects a nervous system still on alert early on, from a racing mind, a late drink, or late work, rather than a defect a new device can undo.
Can my sleep tracker make me anxious about sleep?
Yes. The pattern has a name, orthosomnia, a preoccupation with perfect sleep data. Worrying about the score raises alertness at bedtime, which delays sleep and produces the poor number you feared. The missing piece is a wind-down skill underneath the data, not a better ring.
