Should you trust your sleep score? A straight answer

Here is the honest version. A sleep score is not a measurement, it is an estimate. In a sleep lab, sleep is scored from brain waves, eye movement, and muscle activity. Your wearable sees none of that. It infers sleep from indirect signals, mainly heart rate and heart rate variability from an optical sensor, motion from an accelerometer, and skin temperature, then a proprietary formula turns those into a single number.

That design does some things well and other things poorly. Consumer devices are quite good at telling sleep from wake, often catching more than 90 percent of the time you are asleep. They are far weaker at calling which stage you are in, and the composite score inherits that weakness (Schyvens et al., 2025). So the number is real data, but it is a described night, not a measured one.

Because your device measures you the same imperfect way every night, its errors are fairly consistent, so the direction of the line over two to four weeks is meaningful even when any single night is fuzzy. A score that drifts down across a stretch of late nights, travel, or alcohol is telling you something true about your habits. That is the signal worth reading, and it is where the number actually helps you make a change.

The trouble starts when you ask the score to do things it cannot.

First, it is unreliable for judging a single night. The margin of error on one night is wide enough that a 62 and a 78 can describe nights that felt the same in your body. Second, the stage breakdown, the neat deep, light, and REM percentages, is the least accurate part, because staging is exactly where consumer devices diverge most from lab measurement (Chinoy et al., 2021). Reading tonight's deep-sleep minutes as if they were precise is reading noise as signal.

So the score is a fine long-range gauge and a poor single-night judge. Most sleep-tracker anxiety comes from using it as the second.

Should you check your sleep score every morning?

There is a name for this loop. Clinicians describe orthosomnia, where the pursuit of perfect tracked sleep starts to worsen sleep by adding anxiety and pressure around it (Baron et al., 2017). If your first act each morning is to read a number that then decides how tired you are allowed to feel, the tracker has stopped informing you and started running you. A useful move is to check the trend once a week, not the score once a day.

Turn the trend into a wind-down cue

You can still get real value from the device. Point it at your evening, not your self-image.

Watch the weekly direction and the inputs you control. If your score trends down after late work, screens in bed, or a nightcap, that is a behavior loop you can act on. Better still, use the evening numbers as a cue: if your resting heart rate is still high at 10pm, that is a signal to start winding down, not a grade on last night. The device is most useful when it prompts a habit, and least useful when it hands you a verdict.
